Eager.one contributes to OVV investigation of the bridge lifting accident in Lochem
The Dutch Safety Board (Onderzoeksraad voor Veiligheid – OVV) has published its investigation report into the lifting accident that occurred on 21 February 2024 during the construction of a new bridge in Lochem. The accident took place during the installation of a bridge over the Twentekanaal and had a significant impact on the workers involved and the wider sector. While hoisting a bridge arch, part of the structure fell from the lifting installation onto a work platform where four employees were present. Two workers lost their lives, and two others were injured.
The OVV investigated the incident to understand its direct causes and underlying factors. The purpose of this independent investigation is to gain insight so that similar accidents can be prevented in the future.
The investigation found that the risks associated with the lifting operation were not sufficiently mapped out during the preparation and execution of the project. The OVV report notes that no full assessment was carried out regarding the stability of the bridge arch and the associated safety margins during the lifting work. The report also states that the parties involved relied on each other’s expertise and experience.
Eager.one supported the investigation by providing technical analyses, which are included in the documentation published by the OVV. Our contribution offered insights into the lifting operation and the structural aspects of the incident.
We value the collaboration with De Onderzoeksraad voor Veiligheid (OVV) and the importance of independent investigations into safety in complex lifting and construction operations. Insights from such investigations play an important role in improving safety processes and risk management within the sector.
